Learn more about ultrasound

Ultrasound available quickly? Yes, it’s true!

Has your doctor prescribed a pelvic, abdominal or other type of ultrasound, and would you like to make an appointment for the exam of your choice? Our private clinics are located in Montreal, Laval, Brossard, Boisbriand and Sherbrooke.

What is an ultrasound?

An ultrasound uses high-frequency sound, therefore it does not have the risks associated to x-rays (a different technique). Ultrasounds have no known side effects.

An ultrasound beam is used to create diagnostic images of various soft tissues such as those in the pelvic region (uterus, ovaries, prostate) or the abdominal region (liver, kidneys, pancreas). A gel is applied to the skin and a probe is moved over the region to be examined.

Ultrasound is a medical imaging technology. Due to its simplicity and safety, it is often the preferred test to make a diagnosis for many musculoskeletal conditions (tendonitis, bursitis, capsulitis).

How long does an ultrasound take?

Ultrasound is a relatively quick exam and only takes an average of 15-30 minutes. Your visit to Medvue may take 15-40 minutes.

How do you prepare for an ultrasound?

Preparing for an ultrasound depends on the different types of exams. For some exams, you need to be fasting or drink a large amount of water before you get to the clinic. To see the preparation for your ultrasound, click here

How is an ultrasound performed?

At your visit, you will be asked to put on a gown and remove any jewelry or metal objects which might lower the quality of the images. You will lie down on the examination table and the technician will place warm gel on the area being studied before carrying out the exam.

Can ultrasound detect cancer?

Ultrasound can locate a tumour in some organs such as breasts, testicles, liver, kidneys, thyroid, pancreas and ovaries. Ultrasound can tell a cyst from a solid tumour and also identify the stage of progression of some cancers. In some cases, the healthcare professional will recommend a biopsy or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exam to refine the diagnosis.

How long do ultrasound results take?

The ultrasound results are sent to your doctor within 48 hours. Your doctor will then get in touch with you to let you know the results of your exam.

Can you have a pelvic ultrasound during your period?

An ultrasound can be performed during your period without compromising the exam. Menstruation does not significantly interfere with the ultrasound waves.

How early can an ultrasound detect pregnancy?

An ultrasound can detect a pregnancy during the first trimester, at about four and a half weeks. The gestational sac can be seen at that time but is only visible through the vagina (transvaginal or endovaginal route).

Is a transvaginal ultrasound painful?

The exam may be uncomfortable because of where the probe is, but it is painless and very fast, only lasting about 15 minutes.
