What is an ultrasound?
Ultrasound is a medical imaging technology. Due to its simplicity and safety, it is often the preferred test to make a diagnosis.
An ultrasound beam is used to create diagnostic images of various soft tissues such as those of the breast, liver, uterus and kidneys. A gel is applied to the skin and a probe is moved over the region to be examined.
An ultrasound uses high-frequency sound, therefore it does not have the risks associated to x-rays (a different technique). Ultrasounds have no known side effects.
