What is an abdominal ultrasound?

Abdominal ultrasounds are used to assess the upper abdomen. It also allows:

  • To evaluate several organs, including the liver, gallbladder, pancreas and kidneys;
  • To evaluate the aorta, inferior vena cava and wall of the abdominal cavity;
  • To detect inflammation, cirrhosis, gallstones and possible cysts or tumors.
