Preparation

All Medvue Medical Imaging clinics are private clinics. The costs of our MRI scans are not covered by the provincial medical plan (RAMQ), and must be paid for by the individual or company arranging for the exam. Most MRI scans are covered by private insurance policies and/or Group Benefit Programs, CSST – SAAQ agreements, or may even be covered by medical tax credits (verify with CRA at 1-800-959-8281). We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, debit cards and cash.

An average MRI exam takes approximately 30 minutes to complete, depending on what type of exam is being performed. During the exam, an injection of contrast may be necessary to improve image quality and provide more information. This substance (Gadolinium) contains no iodine, and side effects are extremely rare.

MRI images are obtained using a strong magnetic field; therefore careful screening must be done to limit metal objects into the exam room. A questionnaire must be filled and signed prior to any MRI exam to verify for any metal implants, objects or devices for your safety. Some examples of absolute contra-indications :

  • pacemaker/defibrillator
  • a coronary bypass graft with epicardial pacer wires still in place
  • cerebral aneurysm clip
  • ocular or cochlear implants
  • implanted medical device (i.e. body implants, insulin pump, etc.)
  • an ocular foreign body

Please take note that all jewelry and hair clips must be removed before any MRI exam.

Other important considerations that must be mentioned before booking your MRI appointment are:

  • allergies
  • prescribed medication (Metformin, Glucophage)
  • pregnant women (MRI on pregnant women can only be done on a rare circumstances and on a STRICT advice of a physician.)
  • patients with limited mobility
  • it may be required to fast prior your exam, but these instructions will be given to you beforehand if necessary.

Unless otherwise informed by a physician, patients may take their medication as usual.

During your MRI, the technologist will communicate with you via our built-in intercom system. If you need assistance or become uncomfortable during your exam, you will have a call button that allows you to reach the technologist at any time.
